One of the most common questions I receive is: “Do I need a DNO application for my solar system?”
Unfortunately, I often hear of installers telling customers they don’t need one when they actually do. This can leave the homeowner personally liable for the consequences. To clear things up, here’s a straightforward guide to what a DNO application is, when it’s required, and why it’s essential.
What Is a DNO?
“DNO” stands for Distribution Network Operator. This is the company that owns and manages the local electricity network. They oversee the cables, transformers, and infrastructure that distribute electricity from the National Grid to your home.
There are 11 network regions across the UK, operated by multiple DNOs. Your local DNO ensures that any generation system (like solar panels) connected to the grid can do so safely without overloading the local network.

Who Needs a DNO Application?
Everyone installing a solar PV system must notify or apply to their local DNO.
The type of application depends on the size of your system:
G98 (formerly G83) applications are for small systems up to 3.68kW per phase. This is a notification rather than a full application and is submitted after installation.
G99 applications are for systems over 3.68kW per phase. This requires approval before installation and a more detailed application process.
Even small systems need to be correctly notified to the DNO. Skipping this step isn’t just bad practice; it’s against regulations.
How the DNO Application Process Works
At Eco Mirage, I take care of the entire DNO process for my customers, so you don’t have to worry about the paperwork. Here’s what happens behind the scenes:
System Design
I calculate the system’s output and determine whether it falls under G98 or G99 regulations.
Application Preparation
I prepare all required technical details, including inverter specifications, electrical diagrams, and generation data.
Submission to the DNO
I submit the application to your local network operator. G98 notifications are sent post-installation; G99 applications must be approved before the system can be installed.
Approval & Documentation
Once approved, the DNO issues an acceptance letter. This is needed if you want to sign up for an export tariff such as the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).
Installation & Commissioning
I complete your installation and register the system with the DNO to ensure everything is fully compliant.
What Happens If You Don’t Get a DNO Application?
Skipping the DNO process, or relying on an installer who ignores it, can have serious consequences:
Personal Liability
You, not the installer, are held responsible for the breach of regulations.
System Shutdown
The DNO can require you to disconnect your system immediately.
Ineligible for Export Payments
Without DNO approval, you can’t get an Export MPAN and can’t be paid through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).
Non-compliance with Regulations
This can affect insurance, resale value, and future upgrades to your system.
What Is an Export MPAN and SEG?
Export MPAN: A unique reference number that allows your system to export energy to the National Grid. This is only issued once your DNO application is approved.
Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): A government scheme that pays you for the excess energy your system exports back to the grid. To qualify, you need both your MCS certificate and the DNO acceptance letter.
Why This Matters
A proper DNO application isn’t just red tape; it’s essential for protecting your investment and ensuring your solar system is safe, legal, and eligible for export payments.
Unfortunately, some installers skip this step to save time, but the risk falls entirely on the homeowner. At Eco Mirage, I handle the entire process correctly and transparently, so you can have total peace of mind.
Understanding the Benefits of a DNO Application
Legal Compliance
A DNO application ensures that your solar installation complies with legal requirements. This protects you from potential fines and legal issues.
Safety Assurance
The DNO checks that your system will not overload the local network. This helps prevent accidents and ensures safe operation.
Financial Incentives
With a DNO application, you can access financial incentives like the Smart Export Guarantee. This allows you to earn money from the energy you export.
Increased Property Value
A compliant solar system can increase your property value. Future buyers will appreciate the legality and safety of your installation.
Final Thoughts
If you’re considering solar, make sure your installer is handling the DNO application properly. If you’re unsure whether your system needs one, or if another company has told you it’s unnecessary, it’s worth getting a second opinion.
I include the DNO application in every installation I do to ensure your system is fully compliant from day one.
