What does “0% VAT on solar installations until 2027” mean?

From 1 April 2022 until 31 March 2027, solar panel systems installed in residential properties are zero-rated for VAT under the UK’s Energy-Saving Materials (ESM) scheme. That means when your installer both supplies and installs the system, you pay no VAT on the materials and labour. After 31 March 2027, the VAT rate will revert to 5%, unless the government extends or changes the policy.
